Hi – the AG Focus Group has put me on to this and I’m curious about this. What’s the idea of these surgeries?

Hi John, the basic idea is that the surgeries help support community, and voluntary groups in an area in their use of Social Media. We’re not here to say what your blog or website should be about, or discuss community issues they promote, just how to use the tools available to you, of which virtually all are free to use.

Am also planning to show up. I think, in answer to John’s question, my take on it would be that a lot of what we are doing now is not about how to blog in itself – which most of us can do just fine, but about using social media for networking – both picking up more local/Brum stuff and getting more of our own stuff out there to a wider audience.

Will pop by on Thursday. At Birmingham Friends of the Earth we have been running a blog and twitter and so hopefully can help out other organisations and share ideas. I also live in Yardley so interested in local groups around the area.

We have a social media surgery every week in our village hall. We call it the computer club. Suppose we had better move with the times and change the name! Trouble is the villagers may not know what they are doing has this new name. They think they are getting together to help each other use the tools available on the web…

Perhaps add a tagline or subtitle for a while to get people used to the terminology?
The Computer Club, social media skills for all.
